In Rome, you know, every time you dig, ancient finds come to light, you can stumble upon ruins of buildings that have fallen into disrepair, and not infrequently you can find artifacts of exceptional historical-artistic value.
This time, however, it was not the usual excavations of the metro that brought out precious treasures of Rome. It was the investigation of a team of agents specialized in the recovery and safeguarding of works of art. This is a new investigative team established by a collaboration between the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and the Ministry of the Interior. These new cyber-agents use cutting-edge technology to fight the illegal trade in art.
And it is the efforts of this team that have led to the discovery of a very precious and rare piece of antiques. It is a Cryptex, a device invented by Leonardo da Vinci for the purpose of preserving secrets. But before we dwell on the characteristics of this magnificent object let’s go in order: how did the find happen?
From what we know, there was an investigation going on of a suspicious individual who apparently had contact with art dealers known to law enforcement. Thanks to the telephone tapping, investigators were able to trace the suspect’s location and waited for the meeting between him and the traffickers sale of the object.
But the investigators did not intervene during the meeting, they preferred to plan ahead arresting the traffickers and taking their place so that they could discover the real intent of the suspect. So the people who showed up at the suspect with the Cryptex in their hands were not art dealers, but undercover investigators. A tipical operation of a spy movie!
Using this clever move, the team managed to exchange a dialogue with the suspect and discover his connection to a secret organization called Ordo Sapientia Imperi. Apparently the purpose of the organization was to get their hands on the secret contained in the Cryptex: a secret connected in some way to the Vatican.
We don’t know exactly how each part of the encounter took place, but we do know that the suspect eventually managed to escape, perhaps suspicious by the questions of the investigators or maybe because warned tetefonically by someone. In any case, the Cryptex is now under expert scrutiny and the agents have enough material to open an investigation into this hitherto unknown organization by law enforcement.
The question experts ask now is: how to open crypex without damaging the content? Yes, because, returning to the object, we can certainly say that opening this type of device is a real enigma.
Anyone who has seen the Da Vinci Code will know that the object has a cylindrical shape on which there are a series of rotating rings. Each ring has all the letters of the alphabet engraved on it. Only by composing the secret word, by inserting letter after letter along all the rings, is it possible to open the object and get your hands on its contents.
Otherwise, if you use force to open the object, there is a risk that the vinegar bottle placed inside the cylinder will break. This must not happen because the vinegar would dissolve the parchment with the secret.
And here lies the genius of Da Vinci. Only those who knew the secret word could open a cryptex. In this way, military plans or delicate political decisions could be sent that should not fall into the hands of enemies. And hiding secrets in cryptex was a great way to make sure the message only and exclusively got into the hands of the recipient.
Now it remains to understand one thing: how to trace the secret word that serves to open the cryptex found in Rome? Some people think the suspect is the only one with a key to open it. It’s probably a code to be cracked.
Who will take the task of investigating to find out the secret word and understand what is behind this incredible story? You’d be able to open the cryptex?
